Weingartia is a small genus of globular cacti native to the mountainous regions of Bolivia. Known for its compact, rounded shape, these cacti often feature spines ranging from soft to sharp, arranged on prominent ribs or tubercles. Their vibrant flowers, typically yellow, orange, or red, bloom from the crown and create a beautiful contrast against their spiny bodies.
Weingartia species are popular among collectors due to their unique appearance, hardiness, and ability to thrive in small pots. These cacti are closely related to the genera Sulcorebutia and Rebutia, sharing similar care needs and aesthetics.
Care Tips:
- Light: Prefers bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light. Direct morning sun is ideal, but avoid prolonged exposure to harsh midday rays.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly during the growing season (spring and summer) and reduce significantly in winter.
- Soil: Use well-draining cactus soil, supplemented with sand or pumice for optimal drainage.
- Temperature: Thrives in temperatures between 15°C to 30°C (59°F to 86°F). Keep above 5°C (41°F) to avoid frost damage.
- Fertilizer: Apply a balanced cactus fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season. Avoid overfeeding.
- Repotting: Repot every 3-4 years or when the plant outgrows its pot. Choose a pot with drainage holes.
- Propagation: Propagate through seeds or offsets, if present. Seed propagation may take time but produces healthy plants.
