Mammillaria hahniana, commonly referred to as the Old Lady Cactus, is a beautiful species native to central Mexico. This cactus is known for its globular shape, which is densely covered with fine, white, hair-like spines, giving it a soft and woolly appearance. Over time, it may grow in clusters, forming an attractive mound of multiple stems.
During the blooming season, Mammillaria hahniana produces a ring of vibrant pink to magenta flowers around its crown, creating a striking contrast with its snowy-white spines. Its unique appearance and low-maintenance nature make it a favorite among cactus enthusiasts and collectors.
How to Care
- Light: Thrives in bright, indirect sunlight or filtered light. Can tolerate some direct sunlight but needs protection from intense midday rays.
- Watering: Allow the soil to dry completely between waterings. Water sparingly in winter when the plant is dormant.
- Soil: Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil with added sand or pumice.
- Temperature: Prefers temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F). Protect from frost and maintain above 10°C (50°F).
- Fertilizer: Feed monthly with a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring to summer). Avoid fertilizing in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every 2-3 years, or when the plant outgrows its container. Use fresh soil for optimal growth.
- Propagation: Propagate through offsets or seeds. Offsets are the easiest method, especially for clumping specimens.
