Austrocylindropuntia Subulata, commonly known as the “Easter Lily Cactus” or “Common Ridge Cactus,” is a striking species native to South America, specifically the Andean region. This cactus is well known for its tall, cylindrical, branching stems that grow in an upright fashion, often reaching heights of 3-5 meters (10-16 feet) in the wild. The stems are vibrant green and can appear slightly ribbed, giving the plant a distinct texture.
In late spring to early summer, Austrocylindropuntia Subulata produces large, showy flowers that are usually bright yellow, pink, or orange. These beautiful blooms attract pollinators, making it a wonderful addition to gardens or indoor spaces that receive plenty of sunlight. Its ability to grow in diverse environments, including rocky hillsides and deserts, makes it a hardy cactus that thrives in both gardens and as an indoor ornamental plant.
Despite its tall growth habit, it is relatively easy to maintain, needing only occasional watering and well-draining soil to thrive. It is often used as a specimen plant or for creating vertical displays in desert or xeriscape gardens.
How to Care
- Light: Place in a spot with full sunlight for at least 6 hours a day. It thrives in direct sunlight.
- Watering: Water when the soil is dry, typically every 2–3 weeks during the warmer months. Water sparingly during the winter.
- Soil: Use well-draining cactus or succulent soil, with added perlite or sand for better drainage.
- Temperature: Prefers warm temperatures, between 20°C and 30°C (68°F–86°F). It can tolerate brief periods of cold but should be protected from frost.
- Fertilizer: Fertilize once a month with a diluted cactus fertilizer during the growing season (spring to summer). Avoid fertilizing in winter.
- Repotting: Repot every 2–3 years or when the plant becomes root-bound.
